Interior Trends For Autumn 2014

Autumn is the time of year where we seek comfort in our homes. Spending more time inside, we want to create spaces we love to use. So we decided to explore some of our favourite interior design trends for Autumn 2014.

Layering

One way to bring a sense of warmth into the home is by layering. Layering not only adds warmth to your rooms but also interest, texture and depth. Simply adding some well placed cushions or throws to your lounge will add instant comfort and make it cozy and inviting.  A rug, in tonal shades, will add a splash of colour or give a touch of luxury to a hard floor.

Layering prints can also create interest and depth to a room. Try mixing and matching prints; floral with stripes for example but be careful to make sure they balance and do not compete for attention.

Layering is a good choice for bedrooms. Transform the room with a mix of throws, quilts and cushions of different shapes and sizes.

Pop Art

Bring life into your home by combining bright and bold colours in this 60’s inspired trend. The idea is to choose two bright contrasting colours and then a neutral tone to balance them out.  Even if you’re not into bright colourful walls, the pop art theme can still shine through in your home in the form of accessories such as cushions, wall art, chinaware and fabrics.

When it comes to furniture think, minimalist and futuristic, round shapes and bright coloured pieces often made out of plastic. Surfaces are normally glossy to reflect the colours on the wall, creating a three dimensional image.

With this trend it is important not to overload the space, make sure to balance out bright clashing colours with neutral tones and patterns. This trend will spruce up your décor and demand attention.

Blues

From rich, saturated blues such as navy, indigo and imperial to more vibrant shades of peacock, cobalt and even turquoise, interior designers are definitely going through a blue phase this autumn. We are likely to see feature walls, statement furniture, accessories and cookware in a variety of blue shades. Blues are known to add a sense of class and character to a room.  Darker shades of blue can also add depth and warmth.

Cornwall Home & Lifestyle Show exhibitors Iroka are big fans of the blue trend; “The colour that sticks; Cobalt blue has been an industry favourite for the past year. Coming in a large variety of shade and form, whether it’s an ombre cushion, sticking lighting or bold seating, this colour is sure to please.”

Nordic

This 60’s and 70’s inspired trend incorporating Scandinavian folk prints and shapes is set to be a winner this autumn. The key concept features white walls, light wooden floors and an abundance of natural lighting. The materials used to decorate are all natural and are all from earthy colour palettes.  Folk style incorporates floral patterns and original pieces of artwork to really make the room your own.

This trend requires you to de-clutter so opt for furniture that doubles up as storage. Keep clean lines so that the design is easy on the eye. This trend creates a natural, clean look and feel to your home, bringing the outside landscape in.

Cornwall Home & Lifestyle Show exhibitor Corinne Twining from Tiles & Interiors, reacts to this years trends“Nordic has to be my all-time favourite, it works really well for long term investments like bathrooms, kitchens and tiles and is a very classy base concept for clients to individualise. Actually it works really well with all of this year’s trends, especially Blues.”
